Thirteen riders participated in The Corinthian Challenge Charity Race for Irish Injured Jockeys (IIJ) at The Curragh Racecourse on Sunday, July 21, 2024. The riders were Diane Scannell, Joanne Quirke, Bridget Speirs, Ryan Sands, Megan O’Leary, Brian Mulvey, Alannah O’Donoghue, Heather MacKenzie, Suzy Quirke, Stephanie Carter, Jenny Fitzsimons, Niamh Byrne and Conor O’Hara. Megan O’Leary rode Ndaawi to victory for trainer Gordon Elliott, representing owners Easyfix. Bridget Speirs secured second place on Jungle Cove for Jessica Harrington, with Niamh Byrne coming in third place on Endless Pursuit, also riding for Mrs. Harrington.
Speaking after the race winning rider Megan O’Leary said “this is the most amazing thing I have ever done, it was brilliant, an absolute thrill and a huge tick off the bucket list!” She thanked Gordon Elliott, her sponsors Blandford Bloodstock, the owners Easyfix, and the team in the yard for their support, encouraging others to participate in this event.
Ruby Walsh, Chairman of Irish Injured Jockeys, commended the participants for their dedication and for the support they showed each other. The riders put in a lot of effort to raise awareness and funds for Irish Injured Jockeys. Furthermore, we had a great time throughout the journey.
The Corinthian Challenge, organized annually by the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund, has successfully raised over €500,000. Each rider has the opportunity to immerse themselves in the life of a jockey, from training and staying fit to preparing for the race and finally riding on the track. Donations to support their cause can still be made on www.corinthianchallenge.com.
Irish Injured Jockeys extend congratulations to all participants for their exceptional commitment and perseverance, acknowledging them as true champions.
